Start here

The hard part is not the alphabet.

A hard alphabet for a fortnight, then a language like any other.

Six cases, aspect pairs and stress patterns are what make Russian demanding. Taught as connected logic by a native tutor, they stop being a list to memorise.

  • You read, and want to read in the original

Russian literature is the reason a great many adults start. It is a slow goal and a genuinely reachable one.

  • Family or heritage

Understanding grandparents, or giving children the language, is a different brief from tourist Russian and deserves a different programme.

  • Professional or academic need

Research, policy, energy and law all still run on Russian-language sources. Reading fluency is a distinct skill and can be targeted directly.

  • The alphabet is not the obstacle

Cyrillic takes a week or two. It is the case system that needs a good teacher, and that is precisely what we match you with.

Why Learn&Co is different

"Everyone comes to language learning for a reason — but what keeps people going is how it makes them feel. Seen. Capable. Connected. That's what we create at Learn&Co."
Maria Toubbe, founder of Learn&CoMaria ToubbeCEO & Founder, Learn&Co

Life in the language

A language that carries its literature with it.

Russian is spoken across a vast region and read far beyond it. Whether your goal is conversation, reading or professional use, the culture comes into the lesson because the language does not separate from it.

  • Cyrillic early

Reading and writing from the first fortnight, so nothing later has to be relearned from transliteration.

  • Cases as a system

Taught by function rather than as six tables, which is what makes them usable in speech.

  • Material you care about

Literature, news or professional sources — practice built from what you actually want to read.

The Learn&Co method

A selected network first. Your match, second.

We do not go looking for a Russian tutor once you enquire. The selection has already happened: our network is built slowly, from specialists we have interviewed, observed and chosen to work with — for their teaching, not simply their passport.

What happens after your enquiry is the second layer. Maria listens first — your goal, your level, your temperament, your timetable — and then chooses the specialist inside that network who fits the brief. You meet them on a chemistry call before anything is committed, and the programme is written around your life from there.

  • A network selected before you arrive

Russian specialists we have already interviewed, referenced and chosen — vetted for teaching skill, subject depth and the ability to adapt.

  • A conversation before a tutor

Maria hears the brief first — what you need Russian for, by when, and how you like to learn.

  • Matched from the network

The specialist inside the network who suits your goal, level and temperament is named to you, with Maria overseeing the match — no rota, no algorithm, no directory to scroll.

  • A chemistry call, then oversight

You meet the tutor before anything is booked. Progress reports, founder check-ins and rematching if the fit ever stops working.

What each Russian route costs.

Every route is priced on its own model — monthly for tuition, per term for groups, per programme for travel. The figures below are the starting points; the full private plans, with the saving for a longer commitment, sit on the private tuition page.

  • Flexi £75/hr for 4 hours (£300); Mastery £64/hr for 48 hours used within up to 12 months (£3,060). VAT included.

    From £64/hr

  • Executive one-to-one from £120/hr on 4 hours (£480), £102/hr on 48 hours used within up to 12 months (£4,896); open business group terms from £950 per person for ten weeks. VAT included.

    From £120/hr

All figures include VAT. Private tuition prices are based on one hour a week online; group terms run for ten weeks with never more than six people. Corporate programmes are quoted in full after a scoping call.

Discuss a programme

Before you book

Learning Russian — your questions, answered.

How long does the alphabet take?
A week or two of consistent practice for most adults. Several letters are already familiar, and the writing system is genuinely phonetic once learned.
Can you focus on reading rather than speaking?
Yes. Reading fluency is a legitimate goal and we will build the programme around it, while keeping enough speaking to hold the grammar in place.
Are there Russian group classes?
Not at present — Russian runs as private tuition, in London or online.
Do you teach children?
Yes, including heritage learners who understand a great deal and need the reading, writing and grammar built up around it.
How long does the Cyrillic alphabet take?
Most adults read Cyrillic slowly within a fortnight and fluently within a couple of months. It is the smallest obstacle in Russian, and the one that puts most people off unnecessarily.
Can I start as a complete beginner?
Yes. Private Russian lessons begin at any level, and the first weeks are built around the alphabet, sound system and a working core of the case system.
Do you teach Russian for exams?
Yes — GCSE, A-Level and IB Russian, and the TORFL certificates, prepared for against the actual paper and mark scheme.
How do you choose my tutor?
Maria hears what you need Russian for, then matches you with a specialist from our network. A chemistry call comes before any commitment.
