A tutor and an adult learner in conversation across a table in a London study

Private lessons

One tutor. One programme. Written entirely around you.

Private language tuition in London and online, in nine languages. Your tutor is selected from our specialist network to suit you, your programme is built from your objective rather than a course book, and Maria stays with the arrangement long after the first lesson.

What you are buying

The lesson is the visible part. The service is the reason it works.

Anyone can sell you an hour with a native speaker. What changes the outcome is who that person is, whether they are right for you, what they teach you, and whether anybody is still paying attention three months later.

  1. The right tutor, selected for you

We do not hand you a directory. The selection has already happened: our network is built from specialists we have interviewed, referenced and chosen to work with. We take the objective, the level, the personality and the schedule, then name the tutor inside that network who fits all four.

  2. A match, not an allocation

Every match is personally overseen by Maria, and you meet your tutor before anything is committed. If the chemistry is not right, we change the tutor — that is a normal part of the service rather than a complaint.

  3. A programme built from your life

Objectives are agreed in writing at the start and the material comes from what you actually need the language for: the meeting, the move, the family, the examination. The plan is revisited as those things change.

  4. Oversight that does not stop

Your tutor writes a monthly progress report, and Maria checks in with you at week six and at intervals after that. Pace, tutor or plan are adjusted when the evidence says they should be.

The Good Schools Guide badge

Our tutor selection and matching is reviewed by The Good Schools Guide, and Learn&Co is a member of The Tutors' Association.

How it works

From first conversation to steady progress.

Six steps, the same for every client, whichever language you are learning. Nothing is automated and nothing is left to chance — including what happens after the lessons have started.

  1. A conversation, not a form

Twenty minutes with Maria to establish what you want to be able to do in the language, by when, and how much time you honestly have.

  2. Tutor matching

We identify the tutor in our network who fits the brief — language variety, professional background, teaching style and availability — rather than the one who happens to be free.

  3. A chemistry call

You meet your proposed tutor before you commit. If they are not right, we go back and find someone who is.

  4. Your programme, in writing

Objectives, level, frequency and the material the lessons will be built from, agreed before the first paid lesson.

  5. Week six check-in

Maria comes back to you at week six to review how the match and the programme are working, alongside your tutor's monthly progress report.

  6. Adjustment as you go

Plans change: a new posting, an examination entry, a move abroad. The programme is adjusted rather than restarted.

Who we teach

Private tuition suits people with a real reason.

Almost everyone who comes to us has a deadline, a move, a family or a job behind the decision. The programme is built around that reason, not around a syllabus.

  • Professionals

Lawyers, bankers, consultants and founders who need a language for negotiation, client work or a posting — taught around a diary that moves.

  • Relocating families

Adults and children preparing for a move, or landing in London and needing English quickly, taught together or separately as the family needs.

  • Pupils and students

Support alongside school, from primary through to A-Level and university, with tutors who know the syllabus as well as the language.

  • Heritage and family speakers

People who understand more than they can say, and want to speak properly to a partner, parents or in-laws rather than start again from nothing.

  • Serious beginners

Adults starting from nothing with a real reason — a house abroad, a citizenship application, a country they keep returning to.

Online and in person

How the lessons are delivered.

  • Online

The default for most clients: one hour a week or more, from anywhere, with the same tutor throughout. Guide prices are based on this format.

  • Face to face in London

At your home, your office or a location that suits, across London and the surrounding area. Quoted individually, as travel and timing vary.

  • Intensive and blended

Several hours a week, or a short intensive block before a deadline, move or examination — often combined with weekly lessons afterwards.

Nine languages

Choose the language you are learning.

Each language has its own tutors, its own examinations and its own page, with the detail that belongs to it.

Learning something outside these nine? Ask us — we may still be able to help through our wider network.

You buy hours, not months. The more hours you commit to, the lower the effective hourly rate — and every private plan carries the identical service. Each plan shows the precise total you are committing to.

Hours of private tuition delivered online, typically used at one hour a week, and including VAT. Face-to-face lessons in London, intensive programmes and additional hours are quoted individually.

Private tuition — your questions, answered.

How much do private language lessons cost?
Private tuition is bought in hours. Flexi is 4 hours at £75/hr (£300 in total); Discovery 12 hours used within up to 3 months at £71/hr (£855); Momentum 24 hours within up to 6 months at £68/hr (£1,620); Mastery 48 hours within up to 12 months at £64/hr (£3,060). All prices include VAT. Face-to-face lessons in London and intensive programmes are quoted individually.
How do you choose my tutor?
Matching happens within our existing network, with Maria overseeing it. We work from your objective, level, availability and the kind of person you learn well with, then identify the specialist in our network who fits. The tutor is always someone we already know, have already observed and have already chosen to work with — the selection happens long before your enquiry, not because of it. You meet them on a chemistry call before anything is committed.
What if the tutor is not right for me?
We change them. Fit is our responsibility, not yours, and rematching is a normal part of the service rather than an exception you have to argue for.
How often will I hear about my progress?
Your tutor writes a monthly progress report, and Maria checks in with you at week six to review how the match and the programme are working. After that the check-ins continue at intervals, and the plan is adjusted when it needs to be.
Are lessons online or in person?
Both. Most clients learn online, which is what our guide prices are based on. Face-to-face tuition is available across London and the surrounding area and is quoted individually.
Which languages can I learn one to one?
French, Spanish, English, Italian, German, Portuguese, Mandarin, Japanese and Russian. If you're looking for a language outside those nine, ask us — we may still be able to help through our wider network.
Can children have private lessons?
Yes. We teach pupils from primary school through to A-Level and university, with tutors who know the relevant syllabus as well as the language, and we work with parents on objectives and reporting.
How quickly can I start?
Most clients have a proposed tutor within a few days of the discovery call, and a first lesson in the week that follows. Rare language and highly specific professional briefs can take a little longer, because we would rather match well than match quickly.
