AP is a performance examination.
AP French Language and Culture assesses what a student can do with French across three modes of communication — interpretive, interpersonal and presentational — in reading, listening, speaking and writing. Tasks are tightly timed and scored against published rubrics, and the themes carry cultural expectations that a general conversational course does not cover.
We do not translate the AP into UK terminology. Students are prepared for the tasks as they are set: the email reply, the argumentative essay from multiple sources, the simulated conversation and the cultural comparison, each against its own rubric and its own clock.
What preparation covers

- Interpretive reading and listening
- Authentic print, audio and combined sources, with the strategies the section rewards: previewing, source triangulation, and answering from evidence rather than from gist.
- Interpersonal writing — the email reply
- Register, task fulfilment and the required question. Short, precise, and easy to lose marks on for reasons that have nothing to do with French.
- Presentational writing — the argumentative essay
- Building and defending a thesis from three sources under time, citing them properly, and sustaining an academic register throughout.
- Interpersonal speaking — the simulated conversation
- Responding within a fixed window to prompts you cannot fully anticipate. Rehearsed until the clock stops being the problem.
- Presentational speaking — the cultural comparison
- A structured spoken comparison between a francophone community and the student's own, with real examples. This is where cultural preparation shows.
- Themes and cultural context
- Worked deliberately across the course themes so that examples are ready and specific rather than improvised.

- Do your tutors actually know the AP, or are they adapting A-Level material?
- We match from tutors who prepare AP candidates. The rubrics and task types are specific, and adapting a UK syllabus to them costs students marks.
- When should preparation start?
- Students who begin in the autumn of the exam year have time to build the cultural bank and to make the timings comfortable. Shorter runs are possible and are planned differently, with a heavier weighting on technique.
- Can you help with the cultural comparison specifically?
- Yes, and it is often the highest-yield single area. Most students lose marks there for lack of specific examples rather than for language.
- Are lessons online?
- Usually, which also means we are not limited to tutors within travelling distance of you. Face to face in London is possible where a suitable specialist is available.
- Do you support AP alongside school work?
- Yes. Preparation is designed around the school's own schedule and assessments rather than competing with them.
- Is there a group option?
- Only where a genuine cohort exists. We do not advertise AP groups that are not scheduled — register your interest and we will tell you if one forms.
