Learning Japanese — your questions, answered.
- Do I have to learn kanji?
- For reading, eventually yes. We start with hiragana and katakana, keep speaking moving in parallel, and introduce kanji on a paced, reviewed schedule so it never becomes the whole lesson.
- Do you prepare for the JLPT?
- Yes, from N5 to N1, with preparation planned backwards from the sitting date and built around the format of the paper.
- Are there Japanese group classes?
- Not at the moment — Japanese runs as private tuition, in London or online. If a group would suit you better, tell Maria and we will let you know if a term opens.
- How often should I have lessons?
- Most adults do best on two shorter sessions a week rather than one long one, because Japanese rewards frequent contact more than long single sittings.
- How long does Japanese really take?
- Longer than a European language, and entirely doable with the right plan. Speaking comes sooner than most people expect; reading is the long game, which is why we sequence kana, then kanji, against your own goals.
- How do you choose my tutor?
- Maria hears the brief first, then matches you with a Japanese specialist from our network. You meet them on a chemistry call before anything is booked.
