Start here

Nobody learns French for the same reason twice.

So the first thing we do is work out which French you actually need.

Whichever route you take, the method underneath is identical: a tutor selected from our specialist network, a programme written for you, and Maria checking in throughout to make sure it is still the right one.

Examinations we prepare for in French: GCSE, IGCSE, A-Level, IB and AP French, the DELF and DALF diplomas, and the TCF and TEF tests used for residency and citizenship. See French exam preparation.

  • You are moving, or already moved

Relocation, a French spouse, a house in the south-west, a residency application. French stops being optional.

  • You need it for work

French clients, a Paris office, a board that switches language over dinner. Competence read as credibility.

  • There is an exam with a date on it

GCSE, A-Level, AP, DELF, DALF, TEF or TCF — a fixed target that rewards specialist preparation.

  • You simply love the language

The most common reason of all, and the one that produces the most durable progress.

What we offer

Four ways to learn French with us.

Choose the route that matches what you are trying to achieve — the format follows from the goal, not the other way round.

  1. Private French lessons

One specialist, matched from our network, and a programme written around your goal.

Private French tuition in London or online, at any level. Your specialist is matched from the French teachers already selected into our network, you meet them on a chemistry call, and the programme is built from what you actually need to do in French.

    From £64/hr

Flexi £75/hr for 4 hours (£300); Mastery £64/hr for 48 hours used within up to 12 months (£3,060). VAT included.

  2. French group classes

Ten-week terms, never more than six people in the room.

Structured, conversation, business and exam groups in French, live in Central London and online, Tuesdays to Thursdays. Levels run from complete beginner through to advanced.

    From £690 / term

Entry point: the B1–B2 conversation club. 10 × 90-minute sessions — 15 teaching hours — per learner. VAT included. Structured courses £790–£910, group exam preparation £950.

    Explore →
  3. French exam preparation

Technique for the paper in front of you, not general fluency.

Preparation built backwards from the exam date and the specification your school or institution actually follows, with a tutor who knows the mark scheme.

    From £89/hr

Private preparation £105/hr for 4 hours, £89/hr for 48 hours used within up to 12 months. Group exam terms £950 for ten weeks.

    Explore →
  4. Business French

Language that holds up in the meeting, not just the lesson.

Programmes for executives and teams, scheduled around real diaries, with progress reporting for whoever is sponsoring the training.

    From £120/hr

Executive one-to-one from £120/hr on 4 hours (£480), £102/hr on 48 hours used within up to 12 months (£4,896); open business group terms from £950 per person for ten weeks. VAT included.

Why Learn&Co is different

"Everyone comes to language learning for a reason — but what keeps people going is how it makes them feel. Seen. Capable. Connected. That's what we create at Learn&Co."
Maria Toubbe, founder of Learn&CoMaria ToubbeCEO & Founder, Learn&Co

Life in the language

French is a language with opinions about how it is used.

Register, precision and the pleasure taken in saying something well are not decoration in French — they are how you are read. Your tutor teaches the language and the code around it at the same time, because in French the two are inseparable.

  • Tu, vous and everything they signal

The choice carries more weight than English speakers expect, at work and at the table. We teach the judgement, not just the conjugation.

  • France, and the French-speaking world

Standard French in the lesson, with enough of Belgium, Switzerland, Quebec and West Africa that a call from Montreal is not a shock.

  • Culture as material

Cinema, food, politics or literature — the practice material comes from what you already care about, which is why people keep going.

Beyond the lesson

French, lived rather than studied.

Two of the things that make Learn&Co unlike a tutoring agency: we also take people to France. One is built for adults who want to disappear into the language for a week; the other for schools who want a trip that teaches as well as it travels.

French Immersive Retreats

A week in France that moves you further than a term of lessons.

Mornings of structured teaching. Afternoons and evenings spent with people who have no interest in slowing down for you — markets, kitchens, long tables, arguments about lunch. It is the fastest most adults ever progress, and the part they talk about for years.

School trips & exchanges

Curated trips and exchanges in France, with the logistics handled.

Designed with heads of MFL and run end to end: partner schools, host families, cultural programme, safeguarding, risk assessment and pastoral care. The department teaches; we administrate.

The Learn&Co method

A selected network first. Your match, second.

We do not go looking for a French tutor once you enquire. The selection has already happened: our network is built slowly, from specialists we have interviewed, observed and chosen to work with — for their teaching, not simply their passport.

What happens after your enquiry is the second layer. Maria listens first — your goal, your level, your temperament, your timetable — and then chooses the specialist inside that network who fits the brief. You meet them on a chemistry call before anything is committed, and the programme is written around your life from there.

The Good Schools Guide badgeOur tutor matching is reviewed by The Good Schools Guide.

Book a discovery call
  • A network selected before you arrive

French specialists we have already interviewed, referenced and chosen — vetted for teaching skill, subject depth and the ability to adapt.

  • A conversation before a tutor

Maria hears the brief first — what you need French for, by when, and how you like to learn.

  • Matched from the network

The specialist inside the network who suits your goal, level and temperament is named to you, with Maria overseeing the match — no rota, no algorithm, no directory to scroll.

  • A chemistry call, then oversight

You meet the tutor before anything is booked. Progress reports, founder check-ins and rematching if the fit ever stops working.

Before you book

Learning French — your questions, answered.

Are French lessons suitable for complete beginners?
Yes — a large share of our French clients start from nothing at all. Beginner programmes are built around speaking from the first lesson, with grammar introduced only as it becomes useful, so you are holding short real conversations long before you have finished the textbook you never open.
Can I become fluent as an adult?
Yes. Adults learn differently from children, not worse: you bring context, discipline and a reason for learning, which children rarely have. What matters is regular contact with the language, a tutor who pushes you to speak, and material drawn from your actual life. Most adults who work with us weekly and use French between lessons are comfortable in everyday conversation within a year.
Do you teach children?
We do. We teach children and teenagers one to one, both for general French and for school work, and we match them with tutors who genuinely enjoy teaching that age group. Parents receive progress reports, and we are happy to work alongside a school's syllabus rather than against it.
Can I learn online?
Yes — online lessons are available anywhere in the world, and are how most of our clients learn. Face-to-face French lessons are available in selected London areas, subject to tutor availability, and many clients run a hybrid: in person when diaries allow, online when they do not.
Can you help me if I'm moving to France?
This is one of our most common briefs. A relocation programme covers the French you will actually need — the mairie, the notaire, schools, builders, neighbours and dinner tables — and, where a residency or naturalisation application requires it, prepares you for the TEF or TCF test at the level you need.
How often should I have lessons?
One hour a week is the usual starting point and is enough to make steady progress when paired with small amounts of practice between sessions. Two or three hours a week produces noticeably faster results, and clients working to a fixed exam or relocation date often go intensive for a period. Maria will recommend a rhythm on your discovery call.
How do you choose my tutor?
Personally, never by algorithm. Maria speaks to you first about your goals, your level, your interests and how you like to be taught, then proposes a specific native French tutor and arranges a short chemistry call. Nothing is committed until the fit feels right, and if it ever stops working we rematch you.
How long does it take to become conversational?
From a standing start, most learners doing an hour a week plus light practice are managing real, if imperfect, conversation within six to nine months, and are comfortable within a year. Learners returning to French after school usually get there considerably faster, because more has survived than they expect.
Do you prepare students for exams too?
Yes. We prepare candidates for GCSE, A-Level and AP French, for the DELF and DALF diplomas, and for the TEF and TCF tests used in French residency and citizenship applications. Exam programmes work backwards from the date, with past papers, mark-scheme technique and examiner expectations built in.
