Our founder’s story

Discover how Maria’s obsession with real-world fluency sparked a whole new way to learn.
Growing up, languages swirled around me—Polish and German from my mother, Cameroonian dialects from my father’s side, and, of course, French everywhere else.
But most of them were off-limits: like secret codes, spoken over our heads at the dinner table, always between the adults.
“I learned to listen from the edges, to piece together meaning from gestures and tone, but it left me wanting to belong—to have a voice.”
When I was four, I made my first big trip—a journey to Cameroon. I don’t remember much, just flashes: the heat, the colors, the sense that there was a whole world outside the life I knew.

At school, I studied German and English. While the languages of my family felt tangled and just out of reach, German offered clarity. For the first time, language felt like solid ground. There was a structure and logic to it, rules I could trust.
But English was another story. An enigma.

No matter how hard I fought, it just never clicked… until I went to visit my family in the United States at 21.

English was everywhere: on street signs, in shops, at the dinner table, in every conversation.

I asked endless questions. With patience, little by little, I started to understand more. I found myself talking to strangers, ordering food, asking for directions—just trying, failing, and trying again.

By the end of that trip, I realized I could do it.
“It didn’t just change my English—it changed how I saw myself.”
I’d found a confidence and freedom I’d never felt in any classroom. When I got home, I passed the English exam. I moved to Spain (with no knowledge of the language) and after just months of self study, I was mistaken for a Spaniard. I’d figured it out… I’d found my calling: languages.
I was using it to connect, to be part of the world around me.”

I returned to university to study international relations and languages. With two master’s degrees under my belt, plus a series of experiences working abroad—Berlin, Mexico, London—a leap of faith changed everything.

“One day, quite by chance, I began tutoring.”
I dove in deep: building lessons from scratch, researching methodologies online, and stacking every resource I could find. I was obsessed with mapping out the fastest path from absolute beginner to fluent speaker.

But after countless late nights surrounded by piles of materials, I had a breakthrough: no single book or rigid curriculum could carry someone all the way. My students—through every discovery call and feedback session—showed me what really works.
Since those early days, Learn&Co has grown from an idea scribbled in a notebook to a thriving team in London, helping learners of all ages and backgrounds.
